A 40-Minute Wait Changed Everything.
Something happened at the doctor's office the other day.
There are stories that seem insignificant until you realize they’re actually about something much bigger.
This one happened the other day in the waiting room of a doctor’s office.
My partner came with me so I wouldn’t have to go alone.
When it was time for me to go in, the receptionist told us the appointment would take around 30 to 40 minutes.
He would have to wait outside.
Without thinking, I said:
“Why don’t you stay here? It’s cool inside, and the time will go faster.”
He smiled and replied,
“I have a Balance Phone. What am I supposed to do here for 40 minutes?”
And he walked out.
I didn’t think much of it until I was sitting in the doctor’s office.
While I was trying to focus on the appointment, I couldn’t stop thinking about what he had just said.
Just a few months ago, those 40 minutes would have looked exactly like they do for most of us: taking your phone out of your pocket, opening an app without even thinking about it, and letting time disappear.
Forty minutes fly by.
But when they’re over, they leave very little behind.
This time was different.
When I came out, I asked him what he’d done.
He told me he’d wandered into a bookstore, stopped for a snack, bumped into a friend by chance, called his mum. And still made it back before I was finished.
Nothing extraordinary happened.
He simply lived those 40 minutes.
And that’s when something clicked.
People often think Balance Phone is about reducing screen time.
But I think it does something much more interesting.
It removes the easiest option.
And when scrolling is no longer the automatic choice, all the other possibilities quietly come back.
Because life doesn’t only change through big decisions.
Sometimes it changes in 40 ordinary minutes that stop disappearing into a screen and start belonging to you again.
Maybe that’s why this story stayed with me.
Because it seemed insignificant.
Until I realized it was really about something much bigger.
